Solar Panels
A Solar Electric system consists of a number of Solar Panels which are installed on a rooftop or on a ground based installation. The Solar panels generate DC current (like in your car) so they are connected to an Inverter which changes the current to 240v AC mains. The Inverter is a box the size of a large Microwave (but not as deep) and is usually installed in the loft or under stairs cupboard. The AC current is then connected to a Generation Meter which counts the number of units of electricity that your system has generated. This is then connected to your household electricity supply board.

Solar Panels do not need direct sunlight and will generate electricity even in low light conditions. The most efficient installation will be on a South facing roof with a 25-30 degree pitch, with no trees, buildings or chimneys that can cause shading. Of course the amount of daylight hours you get in a year will depend on your location as the extreme South gets more sunshine.
